I tried several processing ideas but finally I decided I liked this sepia toned processing the best. I think the aged looked works for this. Maybe I will post the color version later to compare it to this one.

New England Scenic Calendar 2011

Fall, Autumn, Trees, Orange, Light at the End of the Tunnel, Evergreen

Really loved the sort of tunnel effect these two evergreen trees created and the light at the end bouncing off the golden autumn trees!

The Winding Road, Fence, NH, Hiking, Trail, Sabbaday Falls

Here is a photo of a hiking path in the White Mountains of NH. This trail leads to Sabbaday Falls.  I will maybe post a photo of the falls later in the week.

Sailboat, Bird, Fence, Wings, Stretch

It may be a bit hard to see on this smaller version of the photo but on the mooring ball of the sailboat there is a bird with his wings all stretched out! Thought that was pretty cool. If you click the photo to make it larger you should be able to see the bird better.

Haunted Dreams, Fog, Lake, B&W, Dream

Looking through this foggy window in a cabin by a lake the man on the bench seemed to be haunted by the shadowy figure outside the window.

Rapids, River, Current, B&W

Click to View Larger Version

Well its the week of July 4th and here in MA it has been one of the rainiest and coldest Junes I can remember! I thought this photo was appropriate considering the dreary weather.

Water Slide, Hampton Beach, NH

I kept processing this shot and could not decide on the best way to present it. Finally I settled on this b&w version. I think it gives these waterslides a different feeling than seeing them in color.

Balding, Dandelion

From the looks of its family tree this Dandelion better not get to used to its full head of hair! :D

Gears, b&w, Rust

Nubble Lighthouse Light Tower, Maine, Lighthouse, Maine, York, Cape Neddick Lighthouse

This is the second photo in my Nubble Lighthouse series. Here is a closeup of the light tower on the Nubble Lighthouse converted to b&w. I decided to leave the light in color so it could be seen easier. One interesting thing I noticed  about the lighthouse is that it seems to be easier to see the light from afar then when close up. It must be designed that way I suppose.  Later I will post a photo of the lighthouse from much further away so you can see.

Sailboat, Fog, Foggy, Maine, Ocean

The day is cold, and dark, and dreary;
It rains, and the wind is never weary;
The vine still clings to the mouldering wall,
But at every gust the dead leaves fall,
And the day is dark and dreary.

My life is cold, and dark, and dreary;
It rains, and the wind is never weary;
My thoughts still cling to the mouldering Past,
But the hopes of youth fall thick in the blast,
And the days are dark and dreary.

Be still, sad heart! and cease repining;
Behind the clouds is the sun still shining;
Thy fate is the common fate of all,
Into each life some rain must fall,
Some days must be dark and dreary.

-Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

I thought this poem entitled “The Rainy Day” was perfect for this photo since Longfellow was from Maine and this shot I took of a sailboat moored in the fog was taken in Maine.

Mount Washington, Cog Railroad, Train, b&w

Time flies…when your having fun!

Today is the one year anniversary of  Fotoblography.com! It has been a fun and educational year sharing my photos with you all and visiting your photoblogs as well! I really can’t believe it has been a year already. A year ago today this train was the first photo that I posted to my blog so today I decided to convert it to b&w to give it a more old time feel.

You have probably noticed that I have been doing some spring cleaning too and I am now using a new theme on my blog! I figured after a year it was time for a change. As you may have noticed the images are now larger so I hope they will be easier to see! If anyone notices any bugs I may have missed with my new layout please let me know.

I want to thank everyone for their visits and posts especially the regulars! Last year there were over 2,800 comments on this site which is WAY more then I ever would have imagined when I first started! Having this outlet to share my photos has really meant alot and now when I am out shooting I am constantly thinking if the photo is good enough to be posted or not, and I am taking photos more than I ever have. So stick around hopefully the next year will be even better than the last!

Salem Willows, Salem MA, Pentax K10d, Lensbaby

The entrance to Salem Willows park. Looks kind of scary after the processing and with the Lensbaby effect! I can assure you in person its not!

Boston, Full Moon

I took this photo right after taking the photo I posted last time of the skyline of Boston. As I was getting ready to leave the rooftop location where I took that photo I saw the full moon barely visible in the afternoon brightness just coming into view above these factories. I decided to convert the photo to black and white becuase it was really hard to see the barely visible moon against the bright blue sky in the color version.

John Hancock Tower, Boston, MA

Here is a photo I took last weekend of the John Hancock Tower in Boston, MA. According to Wikipedia The John Hancock Tower is the tallest building in Boston and in fact the tallest building in all of New England.

Tracks to the Clouds,Black and White,Mountain

I posted this photo a few months back in color but was playing around with it today and decided to convert it to b&w to see what it would look like. Here is the result.

A window View in b&w,Fall,Autumn,Pond

As promised here is the same photo as yesterday only this time processed in b&w. I feel that this image takes on a more somber and depressing mood when its in black and white. Now instead of looking out into the beautiful fall landscape planning for a day of hiking it seems the viewer is trapped inside looking out at an outside world that seems so far away and bleak. While in reality only a simple pane of glass separates the viewer from the outside world it may as well be a prison cell. Well of least that was my feelings on the drastic change in tone of the b&w and color versions as I was processing these images. :)

leaves and lily pads,b&w,Fall,Autumn

I was originally going to post this in color but at the last minute I decided to convert it to b&w to see how it looked and I really liked the results so decided to post it like this instead.

Tree, B&W, Silhouette

Mount Washington Boat, Island, Lake, lake winnipesaukee

I got this vantage point of Lake Winnipesaukee from a scenic overlook on the side of the highway. I have posted a photo of this island before but on this particular day I was lucky as the famous Mount Washington boat happened to be passing right as I was taking the photo.  I thought it was cool that the island was smaller then the boat!

B&W Flower

I tried this picture in color first but after converting it to b&w I decided it looked alot better this way. The white hanging flowers stand out better in the b&w version then they did on the color one against the green leaves.

Chimney, A Monument to Lost Happiness

There was something sad about this chimney sitting by itself near the walking path I was on. It was the last remnant of some house or factory and it made me wonder what used to be there. There is almost no evidence left of any building ever being there except for this chimney, forever standing, as a monument for dreams long forgotten.

The Wright Museum, Tank, Wolfeboro, NH

The Wright Museum is a World War II museum that is located in Wolfeboro NH. The poster was so colorful and interesting I decided to desaturate the rest of the photo and leave that in color. I cant decide if it worked or not. Either way I think this is a pretty cool way to advertise a museum with a tank breaking through the wall!

North Conway, Train, NH

Here is the train leaving the North Conway Train station that I showed in my last blog posting.

Castle in the Clouds, Lake Winnipesaukee, mountain

Here is a shot of the “Castle in the Clouds” that overlooks Lake Winnipesaukee. I hiked up another trail on the property that is above the castle to get this vantage point.

Farm, Decay, Paint Peeling

Here is an old decaying farm building found on the same farm where I took the photos of the cows eating that I posted yesterday.

Aquidneck Lobster Company, Newport RI

Gloucester Sailor statue

Here is a photo I took of the famous Gloucester MA monument for sailors who are lost at sea.

Blackberries, B&W, berries, woods, Pentax

Here is a shot of some wild blackberries I found in the woods of NH. I decided to convert the photo to black and white since they are called blackberries and I liked the effect so decided to post it like this.

Train Tracks, BW, NH

I forget exactly where this was taken but I know it was somewhere in the mountains of NH.  I was hiking and the trail crossed an active train track that goes through the woods.

Cannon, Newport, RI, Pentax K10d

Here is a photo I took in Newport RI of a monument of some sort that had a cannon and an anchor. You can see some of the chain from the anchor hanging above the cannon. I really liked all the bricks that where around this monument.

1960 Chevrolet, bw, Pentax K10d

While at Hampton Beach over the weekend I saw this classic car in the parking lot and could not resist taking a photo of it. They don’t make cars like these anymore thats for sure. In 30 years I doubt anyone will be taking pictures of my Toyota Corolla!

Abandoned Church, Maine, Church, Pentax

This abandoned church was overlooking the ocean in Maine. All of the windows were boarded up even on the steeple. For some reason it looked kind of spooky to me.

Tire, Beach, Ocean, Sand

I was walking on the beach and came upon an odd site. A tire that was in good shape just sticking out of the sand as if it where one of the rocks nearby it. I am not sure how it got there maybe it washed ashore? Strange how it was perfectly standing there though.

The New England Holocaust Memorial, Boston, MA, Freedom Trail

This very impressive memorial for the holocaust is in Boston near Faneuil Hall on the famous Boston Freedom Trail. I highly recommend you check it out if you are ever in Boston. To learn more about The New England Holocaust Memorial check out the official website.

Wildcat Mountain, Summit, Mountains, NH

I took the ski lift up to the summit of Wildcat mountain a couple of years ago and here is the beautiful view from the top. It was kind of a hazy day but I found converting the image to black and white actually helped to show more of the surrounding mountains then the color version did. Be sure to click on this image to make it larger because it is kind of small on the page so it would fit.

Alley, Boston, BW photography

Here is an old alleyway in Boston, MA. I thought it was interesting that it was an entirely brick alleyway with both the ground and the walls made of brick. The graffiti and the dirty ground gave the alley a gritty look that I liked.

Mount Washington Boat, Lake Winnipesaukee, NH, Sepia

Here is a photo of the famous MS Mount Washington on Lake Winnipesaukee. If you have ever been to Lake Winnipesaukee in the summer chances are good you have seen this huge boat sometime during your stay. It is very popular with tourists and gives tours of the lake every few hours. I converted this photo to sepia tone and added the noise to give the photo an old time look.

Fowles Soda Shop, City Street, Newburyport

Here is a shot from downtown Newburyport, MA. This old time soda shop / newspaper stand seems to be a relic from the past that has been frozen in time and preserved for today.

Solitary, Fisherman, Newport, Ocean, Wave

This photo was taken in Newport, RI last summer. There was a lone fisherman on some rocks with waves crashing all around him. He must have been pretty dedicated because I am sure he got pretty wet as I remember a few of the waves got pretty close to him.

Apple, Tree, BW photography

While hiking last fall I came upon some wild apple trees in the woods. Someone had put this apple on the tree like this and I found it interesting. It almost looked like the tree was holding the apple and offering it to passer byers. I decided to only leave the apple in color since I wanted that to be the focus of the photo.

Gloucester Harbor, War Ship, Sailboat, Ships, Ocean, Bay

It was a very busy day on Gloucester Harbor last Labor Day weekend when I took this photo as you can see. I found this interesting because every type of boat imaginable is in the picture. From speedboats, to fishing boats, sailboats, and in the distance dwarfing them all a giant warship. There is even a barge of some sort to the left. The term organized chaos comes to my mind seeing all these boats zooming around in every direction!

monument, ocean, sea, sailors

This is a photo I shot of a monument to lost sailors that was overlooking the ocean in Maine. I really like how the b&w conversion came out and it actually makes it easier to see the details of the lighthouses that are carved into the monument then when it was in color. If you look closely you can see the Nubble Lighthouse carved on the left hand site of the monument. If you remember I posted a photo I took of the Nubble Lighthouse earlier if you want to compare the carving to the lighthouse.

Lost at Sea

Union Oyster House, Boston, cobblestone street

Here is a photo I took of the famous Union Oyster House in Boston. For those that don’t know it is the oldest restaurant in Boston and the oldest restaurant in continuous service in the United States (its been open since 1826). Since this is one of the oldest streets in the country I felt this picture would look more timeless once converted to black and white. Overall I am pretty happy with the results. The cobblestone streets and the old restaurants take you back in time even though the illusion is broken since you can see some people with modern items like plastic bags.

Lonely, Tree, Lake Winnipesaukee, BW Photography

This tree was alone and above all the others overlooking Lake Winnipesaukee. I really like how the black and white conversion came out on this one.

Reflection, Fence, Mountain, Lake

I took this shot when I was on vacation in New Hampshire. The lake was like glass and was casting a perfect reflection of the mountain. I tried to spice it up a little so it would not be a typical reflection photo by framing the picture in a fence that I found along an old dirt road in front of the lake. So I ended up getting two reflections the two fence posts and the mountain reflecting in the lake.
